In the lawsuit filed last month, Gary Culver is seeking $150,000 from the Royals and Volume Services Inc. Culver said his spine and right hand were injured in the attack. . . . Edmund Browalski, a baseball writer for the Polish Daily News and an official scorer for Detroit Tigers’ American League games, died Thursday of a heart attack. He was 66. Browalski was chairman and executive secretary of the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. He founded the National Polish American Sports Hall of Fame in Orchard Lake, Mich., and was a member of the Michigan Bowling Hall of Fame. A catcher in the Class C Dixie League in 1935-36, he had covered the Tigers for the Polish Daily News since 1951. . . . Houston Astros’ starting pitcher Bob Knepper underwent arthroscopic knee surgery yesterday and can begin a rehabilitation program in two to three days, said a spokesman for the National League club.
Knepper suffered torn cartilage in his left knee Wednesday during a workout. Knepper should be ready for the beginning of spring training in late February. Knepper compiled a 15-10 record last season and had a 3.20 earned-run average, which ranked 14th in the league.
The National League’s Chicago Cubs suspended season-ticket sales yesterday after reaching the 18,000 mark and announced there are no remaining tickets for the public should the club make the playoffs or World Series this year. The suspension was ordered because the Cubs exhausted commitments for tickets if the club reaches the National League playoffs or the World Series. The club made a commitment of 25,000 tickets to the post- season games as the result of various season ticket packages.
Because the commissioner’s office requires an allocation of 10,000 tickets, the Cubs could not guarantee season ticket holders a seat for any post-season games. . . . The NL’s New York Mets are expected to re- sign pinch-hitter Rusty Staub today. . . . Reliever Steve Howe of the NL’s Los Angeles Dodgers will undergo surgery next week to re- align the ulnar nerve in his pitching elbow.
